Archival Clerk (Summer Student Position)
Job Overview:
WAMP is seeking a motivated Archival Clerk to support a major media preservation initiative. This role will launch an ongoing project to organize, digitize, and consolidate WAMP’s entire archive, including VHS tapes, DVDs, hard drives, USB/thumb drives, and digital film files. The goal is to create a single, structured, and accessible archival system that will be integrated into WAMP’s new website for public access. This position is supported by the Canada Summer Jobs program and offers hands-on experience in archival practice, digital preservation, and media management.
Position Details:
- Dates: June 1 – July 24 (8 weeks)
- Hours: 35 hours per week
- Wage: $25/hour
Key Responsibilities:
- Inventory, catalogue, and organize all WAMP media assets across physical and digital formats
- Digitize analog media (VHS, DVDs) and transfer files from outdated storage formats into modern systems
- Develop and maintain a structured digital archive with consistent file naming and organization
- Record metadata and create documentation to support searchability and long-term access
- Assist in designing archival workflows, guides, and organizational systems
- Ensure safe handling and preservation of physical media
- Support integration of the archive into WAMP’s new website for online accessibility
Qualifications:
- Youth applicant with interest in archives, film, media studies, library sciences, or cultural preservation
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Comfortable using computers and digital file management systems
- Ability to work independently and manage large volumes of media
- Interest in film, storytelling, and preserving cultural history
Learning Outcomes:
- Gain hands-on experience in archival systems and digital preservation
- Learn media digitization techniques across multiple formats (VHS, DVD, digital files)
- Develop skills in metadata creation, cataloguing, and database management
- Understand best practices for long-term media storage and access systems
